Glutathione is a small tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, with the unusual gamma-glutamyl linkage between glutamate and cysteine. Its cysteine thiol group makes it a major non-enzymatic antioxidant in cells. The reduced form, GSH, predominates in most intracellular compartments, while the oxidized disulfide form, GSSG, is produced when GSH reduces reactive oxygen species. Intracellular concentrations often reach millimolar levels, whereas plasma concentrations are much lower, typically in the low micromolar range. This gradient reflects active synthesis, transport, and consumption rather than passive distribution.
Synthesis occurs in two ATP-dependent steps: glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine, and glutathione synthetase adds glycine to complete the tripeptide. The pathway is feedback-inhibited by GSH and limited by cysteine availability, so cysteine supply often constrains production. Once formed, GSH participates in redox buffering, xenobiotic conjugation, and protein glutathionylation. Glutathione peroxidase uses GSH to reduce hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides, yielding GSSG, while glutathione reductase regenerates GSH using NADPH. Glutathione S-transferases conjugate electrophiles to GSH, supporting detoxification and excretion.
Glutathione is a small tripeptide built from glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. Its peptide bond between glutamate and cysteine involves the gamma-carboxyl group rather than the usual alpha-carboxyl group. This structure gives the molecule a reactive thiol on the cysteine residue. The reduced form, often abbreviated GSH, is the predominant intracellular species in many cell types. Because the thiol can donate electrons, glutathione participates in redox chemistry and in the conjugation of reactive molecules.
Cells synthesize glutathione through two ATP-dependent steps: glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine, and glutathione synthetase adds glycine to form the complete tripeptide. Breakdown occurs through gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and subsequent peptidase reactions, forming the gamma-glutamyl cycle. Within cells, glutathione also forms a disulfide-linked dimer called GSSG when two GSH molecules react. The balance between GSH and GSSG is widely used as an indicator of oxidative conditions, although the ratio can vary by compartment and tissue.
Glutathione supports several cellular processes beyond direct antioxidant action. It serves as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase enzymes, which reduce peroxides and conjugate electrophiles, respectively. The molecule also acts as a reservoir of cysteine, an amino acid that can limit protein synthesis and redox signaling. In human nutrition, oral glutathione is sold as a supplement, but how much intact glutathione reaches tissues after ingestion remains an active research question. Clinical claims about supplementation are not uniformly supported by controlled trials.

=== Kava dermopathy === Long-term and heavy kava consumption is associated with a reversible skin condition known as "kava dermopathy", or kanikani (in the Fijian language), characterised by dry and scaly skin covering the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and back. The first symptom to appear is usually dry, peeling skin; some Pacific Islanders deliberately consume large quantities of kava for several weeks in order to get the peeling effect, resulting in a layer of new skin. These effects appeared at consumption levels between 31 grams (1.1 oz) to 440 grams (0.97 lb) a week of kava powder. Despite numerous studies, the mechanism that causes kava dermopathy is poorly understood "but may relate to interference with cholesterol metabolism". The condition is easily treatable with abstinence or lowering of kava intake, as the skin appears to be returning to its normal state within a couple of weeks of reduced or no kava use. Kava dermopathy should not be confused with rare instances of allergic reactions to kava that are usually characterised by itchy rash or puffy face.
==== Metabolism and interactions ==== Deruxtecan is metabolised by CYP3A4, without notable glucuronidation. Moreover, it is a substrate of several transporter systems, i.e. OATP1B1, OATP1B3, MATE2-K, P-gp, MRP1 and BCRP. Therefore, use with itraconazole (CYP3A inhibitor) and ritonavir (OATP1B/CYP3A inhibitor) is contraindicated.
"It is so true that Bolívar has tried to persecute every able-bodied Peruvian without cause, and that when Brigadier General La Fuente was responsible for the last transformation of Trujillo [the Riva-Agüero prison] and that it was titled That Pacifier of the North, [Bolívar] instantly tried to overthrow him. La Fuente made the Peruvian cuirassiers hold on and punish the hussars of Bolívar's guard, who wanted to run over them" He was also accused of being very cruel against the troops of the Royal Army of Peru, where the repression was fierce, with executions of those who did not pay tithes, harassment of women, execution of prisoners without trial, slaughter of cattle, desecration of churches, imprisonment of women and children in Huanta and the burning of the towns of Iquicha, Caruahuran and Huayllas (absent violence on the royalist side). The guerrillas had to take refuge in the hills in the Republic of Iquicha. After independence, the royalist Indians of Huanta had to bear the punishment for supporting the monarchists: it was the payment of a tax of 50,000 pesos that the entire homonymous party had to collect (except the towns of Quinua, Guaychán and Acosvinchos), which demanded Marshal Antonio José de Sucre "for having rebelled against the system of Independence and freedom." In said imposition, coca prices were altered and caused an economic crisis. If the Iquicha Indians rose up against Bolívar's republic, it was neither because they were "deceived" nor because they wanted to perpetuate the most oppressive features of the colonial system. Quite the opposite.

After acetylation, the solvent is evaporated to remove the acetic anhydride, and finally water is added. The amount of water added depends on the amount of plant material used in the beginning of the process, most often 30 milliliters per kilogram of dry plant material. Although the drug is primarily intended for intravenous injection, kompot extraction as described here produces an end product containing residual plant matter, waste chemicals, impure water, and other contaminants, making this a dangerous substance to inject since such impurities can lead to abscesses or anaphylactic shock. Use of Polish heroin has been in decline since the break-up of the Soviet Union and its Central and Eastern European satellite states (Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, et al.) as after 1991 the availability of heroin and other drugs smuggled into those countries from abroad increased enormously. Since then, in Poland "kompot"/"Polish heroin" has all but disappeared, except in a few rural areas where cheaper, purer, more potent drugs have not overwhelmed the illicit marketplace. In Belarus, compote is the most popular psychoactive substance among people on the list of narcological supervision in health care facilities. In 1998 they constituted 75.8% of registered persons, and in 2012 - 53%, and their number increased 2.5 times in the years 1998–2012.
== Legal status == para-Chloroisobutyrylfentanyl has been a Schedule I controlled drug in the United States since 1 February 2018. It was banned in Finland in September 2017, and in Sweden in October 2017.
Prohibitin-targeting peptide 1 (also known as prohibitin-TP01 and TP01; trade name Adipotide) is a peptidomimetic with sequence CKGGRAKDC-GG-D(KLAKLAK)2. It is an experimental proapoptotic drug that has been shown to cause rapid weight loss in mice and rhesus monkeys. Its mechanism of action is to target specific blood vessels supplying adipose tissue with blood, cause the vessels to shrink and the fat cells fed by those vessels to undergo apoptosis. TP01 is designed to bind to two receptors, ANXA2 and prohibitin, that are specific to blood vessels supplying white adipose tissue. As of 2019, clinical development has been discontinued.

After Santiesteban Prats informed Viñas Alonso about the conversation, the Grand Master and the Grand Commander disagreed on where the money should be kept, but it did stay in the Grand Master's office. According to a report by Urquía Carreño, on January 5, 2024, at the offices of the National Masonic Temple, Grand Treasurer Airán Cervera pulled Urquía Carreño aside, and asked him if they could discuss something in private. They went up to the roof, where Airán Cervera told Urquía Carreño that the safe was gone, probably stolen. Urquía Carreño, according to his report, kept this information to himself. At 10:15am on January 9, 2024, the Director of Llansó called Grand Commander Viñas Alonso to inform him that they were in the midst of a food shortage. The two men decided to withdraw 1,000 dollars from the vaults of the Grand Lodge to buy food for the residents. At around noon, Viñas Alonso called Urquía Carreño to inform him that Viñas Alonso would be joined by the Treasurer of the Board of Trustees, Ernesto Valdés García, the Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Frank E. Quevedo Martín, and the Director of the retirement home, Raúl Acosta to come to the vault and withdraw 1,000 dollars. After being informed of the situation, Grand Master Urquía Carreño said that the elevator in his office was broken, and that Urquía Carreño would bring the money to the offices of the Supreme Council. Grand Commander Viñas Alonso refused, citing the rules. Urquía Carreño said that he understood, and would call later to tell Viñas Alonso what time they could come by the office.
Lundberg, M.D, recommended that third-party payers and the public should question paying for this procedure "until or unless additional honest experimentation demonstrates an actual effect." There is no good medical evidence for the effectiveness of therapeutic touch. A Cochrane systematic review, first published in 2004, found "[t]here is no robust evidence that TT promotes healing of acute wounds", but in 2016, the authors retracted it after the validity of the reviewed studies was questioned. The American Cancer Society notes, "Available scientific evidence does not support any claims that TT can cure cancer or other diseases."
Chinese officials described these criticisms as an attempt to politicise the study. Scientists involved in the WHO report, including Liang Wannian, John Watson, and Peter Daszak, objected to the criticism, and said that the report was an example of the collaboration and dialogue required to successfully continue investigations into the matter. In a letter published in Science, a number of scientists, including Ralph Baric, argued that the accidental laboratory leak hypothesis had not been sufficiently investigated and remained possible, calling for greater clarity and additional data. Their letter was criticized by some virologists and public health experts, who said that a "hostile" and "divisive" focus on the WIV was unsupported by evidence, and would cause Chinese scientists and authorities to share less, rather than more data.

GSH is the reduced, thiol-containing form of glutathione, while GSSG is the oxidized disulfide dimer formed when two GSH molecules react. Cells maintain a high GSH-to-GSSG ratio under normal conditions. A shift toward GSSG is often interpreted as oxidative stress, though sample handling can affect the measured ratio.
No. It is a tripeptide made from three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. The gamma-glutamyl bond is unusual and distinguishes it from typical peptide linkages.
Most ingested glutathione is broken down in the gastrointestinal tract into its constituent amino acids. Some formulations may protect it from digestion, but intact absorption and delivery to specific tissues remain uncertain. Research continues on precursors and delivery methods.
It is a tripeptide of glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. The linkage between glutamate and cysteine uses the gamma-carboxyl group, which is unusual for peptides.
